What drives the differences

States with abundant hydropower, natural gas or coal generation, and fewer transmission constraints, tend to have lower residential rates. Northeastern states, California, Alaska and especially Hawaii pay the most, reflecting fuel import costs, grid investment and local policy.

These are statewide averages from the U.S. Energy Information Administration. Your own utility, plan and season can differ significantly, so for an exact answer enter your rate in the charging cost calculator. If your utility offers a time-of-use or EV plan, overnight charging can cost well below your state’s average.
